7. STRUCTURE 1. Dissertations should observe the following order of parts (although all may not necessarily apply in each dissertation): 1. Title Page (containing: title, student's name, name of the University where fieldwork was undertaken, year of graduation, supervisor's name) 2. Two abstracts (summaries, in the appropriate foreign language, of the main arguments and conclusions, not to exceed one page). One of the abstracts should be bound, the other submitted loose. (See page 75). 3. Dedication or Epigraph 4. Contents list 5. List of illustrations (plates, figures, maps and tables, in that order) 6. Acknowledgements 7. List of abbreviations (observing the contemporary preference for the omission of points, e.g.: NATO rather than N.A.T.O, Dr for Dr., etc) 8. Preface (containing: reasons for topic choice; methods employed in gathering data; difficulties encountered) Help With Dissertations 9. Text (including Introduction) 10. Conclusion (containing: reappraisal, in the light of the main discussion, of the themes outlined in the Introduction, substantial personal assessment of the topic and, where appropriate, suggested solutions, recommendations and indications of areas for further research) 11. Appendix(ces) 12. Notes and References 13. Bibliography (see 9.4 and 9.5). 14. Word count (see 4.1) 15. Declaration that the dissertation represents the student’s own, original work (signed and dated). 8. SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPT BOTH DISSERTATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN FULL DRAFT FORM TO THE DEPARTMENTAL OFFICE BY THE LAST WORKING DAY IN AUGUST. THIS IS A CONDITION OF SATISFACTORY COMPLETION OF THIRD YEAR. ANY STUDENT WHO FAILS TO COMPLY WITH THIS REQUIREMENT WILL HAVE FAILED TO COMPLETE THE THIRD YEAR OF HIS/HER COURSE AND ACCORDINGLY WILL BE Help With Dissertations REQUIRED TO SUSPEND HIS/HER STUDIES. REMEMBER: AN ATTENDANCE FORM FOR EACH OF YOUR LINT/ALT PLACEMENT MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR DRAFT DISSERTATIONS. The term "full draft" is understood to mean a manuscript requiring only minor editing prior to submission in final dissertation form. In particular, it should be of at least the minimum length prescribed for the final document (see 4.1 above) and be submitted in a readily legible form, although it need not necessarily be submitted in typescript at this stage. (Submission by fax, electronic mail or telex is not acceptable.) Students must indicate word-count along with submission of their manuscript. 2. Students should note that the deadline set out in 8.1 above refers to the arrival of manuscripts in the Department of Languages and, if sending them by Help With Dissertations post, should allow for possible postal delays by mailing them sufficiently in advance. ALLEGED LOSS OR DELAY IN THE POST DOES NOT CONSTITUTE GROUNDS FOR THE CONDITIONS IN PARA 8.1 TO BE WAIVED; THIS WILL ONLY BE CONSIDERED IF EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF OFFICIAL PROOF OF POSTAGE AND A COPY OF THE MATERIAL SENT. Accordingly, it is ESSENTIAL that students (a) send manuscripts by registered post or equivalent; and (b) retain copies of their manuscripts. 8.3 Students will receive from their supervisors a set of written comments on the submitted manuscripts as soon as practicable after submission and no later than the first Friday of the Autumn term. Manuscripts may be submitted only once for comment. 9. PRESENTATION OF DISSERTATIONS 9.1 One copy of each completed Help With Dissertations dissertation - preferably the original - should be submitted in typewritten form on A4 paper. (Students must also retain a copy; see 10.2.) Typing should be on one side of the paper only and should be double-spaced; a generous left-hand margin should be left to allow for binding. The technical support staff in the School of Management and Languages provide a good service including the provision of an appropriate front cover. 9.2 Pages should be numbered, the figures appearing in the top right-hand corner. The preliminary pages, comprising all items before the main text, should be numbered in lower case Roman numerals; though these numbers are not printed on certain pages (title, etc), they are counted in the sequence. Arabic numerals should begin on the first page of the Help With Dissertations text and all pages thereafter should be numbered. 9.3 The internal structure of the text (including introduction and conclusion) should be made explicit by the systematic use of numbered chapters and sections (and subsections, if necessary), e.g.: 2. Chapter heading 2.1 Section heading 2.1.1 Subsection heading 9.4 Bibliographical references may be included at the end of each chapter or at the end of the text, the notes being numbered accordingly. For such references the author-date system is strongly recommended (see MHRA Style Book, pp. 40-1; ref. under 9.8). The bibliography should be presented in alphabetical order (by author) and should include, for each book consulted, the author's name, full title of the work, publisher and place and date of publication, e.g. Thomson, David, England in the 20th Century, Penguin Books Ltd, Help With Dissertations London, 1965. 9.5 Other written sources - journals, newspapers etc - should likewise be included alphabetically in a separate list. A list of website addresses should also be provided, where appropriate. 9.6 An alphabetical list of oral informants should also be appended; this should indicate their roles, positions and titles as appropriate, and date of interview. 9.7 Students should ensure that they comply with the appropriate conventions governing punctuation, syllabification, abbreviations, use of capitals, etc; it should not be forgotten that usage varies in some respects from language to language. FINAL SUBMISSION 10.1 In order to proceed to the final examinations, students MUST submit the final text of both dissertations (typed and bound). The deadline for submission is the FIRST FRIDAY OF THE SECOND TERM of the student’s final year. The dissertations must be submitted to the Departmental Office (which closes at 5pm), where a register will be kept; they should NOT be given directly to supervisors. Submitted copies of dissertations will be retained by the Department and placed in the University Library after the degree examinations. 10.2 It is advisable to allow at least four Help With Dissertations weeks for typing of dissertations, including checking the type-script. This means, in practice, that the final script should be ready by the middle of November at the latest, to avoid the delays caused by the Christmas vacation period. Failure to have the dissertations typed in time for them to be submitted by the deadline will be entirely the student's responsibility. 10.3 Any dissertation submitted after the deadline specified in 10.1 will receive a formal mark of ZERO. As each dissertation accounts for 7.5% of the final degree mark, students should note that the application of this regulation would almost certainly preclude a student from obtaining a good honours award (First or Upper Second) and could, in the case of average performance in other areas, result in a third class award. Help With Dissertations They should also bear in mind that, when members of staff provide references at the request of students, dissertation work normally forms the basis for comments on students' ability to work on their own initiative and to deadlines. 10.4 Waiving of the deadline specified in 10.1 will be considered only where there are attested extenuating circumstances (serious illness, bereavement, etc.). In the event of there being such extenuating circumstances, a formal letter of explanation must be submitted by the student concerned, ON OR BEFORE THE DATE SPECIFIED IN 10.1, to the Director of Studies (LINT/ALT/FLITE), who will decide on the action to be taken. 10.5 Any student failing to submit both dissertations in satisfactory form by the FRIDAY IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE THIRD TERM will be required Help With Dissertations to suspend his/her studies. 11. EXAMINATIONS 11.1 When evaluating the dissertations and preparing their assessment reports for the External Examiners, the internal assessors will include comments under the following headings: i) structure and length, ii) content, iii) illustrative material and fieldwork, iv) supplementary items, v) language and vi) general comments. 11.2 Dissertations may be discussed with the External Examiners in the oral examinations. 12. FURTHER INFORMATION 12.1 Any further queries regarding dissertations should be addressed to the student’s supervisor(s). RECORD OF PROGRESS FORM • This form is an essential part of the documentation which you must submit to your supervisors during the dissertation writing process. It serves to record the fact that you have availed yourself of supervision and that you have progressed with your dissertation as laid Help With Dissertations down in the Dissertation Regulations (see paragraph 3.3). This form must be completed and sent to your supervisor before leaving each LINT/ALT placement. • Please note: the board which decides on students’ progression into 4th year will use this form and your final draft submission as evidence that you have maintained contact with your supervisor and that you have satisfied the requirements to progress to your final year. It is understood that the information given below refers to your draft version and that it might be subject to amendments after discussion with your supervisor in term one of your final year. • NAME OF SUPERVISOR • OUTLINE OF CONTENT (max. 200 words, please append page if necessary). This should be written in the foreign language, and it should include clear identification of Help With Dissertations the analytical content of the dissertation. • CHAPTER HEADINGS (in the foreign language) • FIELDWORK CARRIED OUT (Give a brief summary of the type of fieldwork you have done, e.g. interviews with whom and about which issues) • NUMBER OF WORDS WRITTEN • CONTACT WITH SUPERVISOR Please tick as appropriate by mail by e-mail by phone and indicate frequency of contact Guidelines for Dissertation Abstracts – Requirements 1. Title, authorship, host university, date of submission 2. Length: excluding title, 300 words 10% tolerance either way (min. 270, max. 330) 3. Structure: introduction, main section, conclusion a. Introduction: probably two sentences, a definition of problem, aim/s, an explanation, possibly, of why studied and why of interest (c. 25 words) b. Main section: probably in one/two paragraph/s, using index/table of contents as a guide, since it should reflect a clear structure. If word limits are overshooting, apply ruthless selection. ii. If I, my, me, mine must be used, then ONLY in the conclusion. iii. There is no problem concerning use of your own words - it is your dissertation. iv.
