Many people have helped me in preparing and writing this dissertation. First and foremost among them is my dissertation chair, David Lam. From the summer after my first year of graduate school, David has taught me about economics, demography, and has sparked my interest in the experiences of Brazil as an advisor, Dissertation Proposal instructor, and mentor. Going beyond the role of most advisors, David helped me secure funding for a month-long research trip to Brazil, for which I am very grateful. Writing a paper on the urbanization of Brazil with him was an experience that taught me much about the process of academic research and writing. The advice and assistance that he provided during the job search process has been Dissertation Proposal extremely valuable. Throughout my time at Michigan, David has served as an exemplary role model for me.
This dissertation has also greatly benefited from the input of the other members of my committee: Albert Park, Bob Schoeni, Gary Solon, and Kathy Terrell. Albert has taught me much about the field of development economics, as an instructor and committee member, and has helped to tie this work to Dissertation Proposal the broader development literature. Bob, in addition to providing generous advice and assistance with my job search, has taken the time to carefully read and provide detailed comments and suggestions on various versions of this dissertation. I admire his helpfulness and professionalism. Gary has taught me all I know about the intergenerational transmission of earnings. He has been an invaluable resource since the time I chose to Dissertation Proposal investigate this topic. Even beyond applying his expertise on this topic, however, he has helped me greatly with my job search and dissertation writing. Kathy has helped me to step back from the intricacies of the analysis and discover how this work fits in to the broader economics literature. Along with Bob, she has encouraged me to think about how the experiences and institutions of Brazil have Dissertation Proposal played a role in what I have observed.
Throughout the last four years of graduate school I have had the good fortune to call the Population Studies Center (PSC) my work home. This opportunity has greatly enriched my academic experience and has provided the resources that allowed me to efficiently complete this dissertation. I would like to acknowledge the financial support of the National Institute of Child Dissertation Proposal Health and Human Development and the National Institute on Aging, which provided funding for the Pre-Doctoral Training Fellowships administered by the Population Studies Center. As one part of the training program, funding was provided for my participation at the Annual Meetings of the Population Association of America in Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Minneapolis. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation also provided support for my research trip to Brazil, Dissertation Proposal including attendance at the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population Quadrennial Conference in Salvador.
I would also like to acknowledge financial support from Rackham Graduate School, which provided support for my first year of studies at the University through a Regents’ Fellowship and funded my participation in the Midwest Economics Association Annual Meetings in Chicago and the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association Annual Dissertation Proposal Meetings in Madrid, Spain and Puebla, Mexico. The Department of Economics also provided support for my participation in the Northeast Universities Development Conference in New Haven, Connecticut.
While at PSC, I have greatly benefited from the tremendous computing resources and helpful support provided by Ricardo Rodriguiz and David Sasaki. It has been a pleasure working with Terri Powell and Ingrid Naaman, who have made every administrative Dissertation Proposal detail at PSC entirely straightforward.
The most rewarding experiences that I have had at PSC have been the interactions and friendships formed with other students. Leticia Marteleto taught me much about the PNAD data and Brazilian demography and culture. Jeff Groen answered my Stata questions and discussed research ideas with me. The past year has been especially enjoyable with the camaraderie and technical assistance provided by Dissertation Proposal Juan Pablo Valenzuela Barros, Cindy Colen, Jasper Hoek, and Christine Schippers. I thoroughly enjoyed co-presenting with Juan Pablo at the LACEA meetings in Madrid. It has been great fun sharing the job market and dissertation experience with Jasper.
Throughout graduate school, and my life in general, my family has been a great support. My parents have always supported my choices, and have wanted, above all else, for Dissertation Proposal me to be happy in life. Their constant love, caring, and reminders to take the time every now and then to celebrate have made my life these past five years all the more enjoyable.
The same can be said of my sister and brother. Sharing the experience of being in graduate school with my sister these past three years and both of them this past year has Dissertation Proposal helped me to appreciate the completion of my studies even more.
My wife, Jenny, has been a constant source of love, encouragement, and fun times. Sharing the time in graduate school with her - the studying, reading, discovering Ann Arbor, taking trips, conducting experiments, cooking, playing tennis, making new friends, writing papers, becoming vegetarian, watching Cosby Show and Frasier re-runs, biking, taking exams, attending conferences, and dissertation Dissertation Proposal writing - has been an extraordinary experience.
